Stephen Waarts of Los Altos performs Sunday in Palo Alto.

The six young winners of the Palo Alto Philharmonic Association’s Concerto Movement Competition – including Los Altos resident Stephen Waarts – are scheduled to perform 3 p.m. Sunday at the philharmonic’s Family Concert.

The event is set for Cubberley Theatre, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.

The winners include violinists Waarts and Stella Chen, pianists Ian Zalles, Hugo Kitano and Iris Wu and cellist Eunice Kim.

The competition was open to instrumentalists and vocalists no older than 18 who had not yet graduated from high school. After a preliminary screening of 77 applicants’ taped performances, 21 finalists were selected to audition before a panel of judges.

Waarts, 12, will play the third movement of Violin Concerto No. 3 by Saint-Saëns. The seventh-grader studies with Li Lin at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and with Alexander Berantshik and Elizabeth Blumenstock.

Chen, 16, will perform the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. She studies with Li Lin at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and attends Palo Alto High School.

Zalles, 17, will play the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 2 by Rachmaninoff. His teacher is Anna Semyanovksky of Mountain View. Zalles is a junior at Gunn High School in Palo Alto.

Kitano, 13, will play the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 3 by Beethoven. An eighth-grader at San Francisco Day School, he studies with Dr. William Wellborn at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Wu, 15, will perform the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 2 by Saint-Saëns. She is a student of Thomas Hansen at Crestmont Conservatory of Music in San Mateo. Wu attends Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough.

Kim, 12, will play Variations on a Rococo Theme by Tchaikovsky. A student of Sieun Lin at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Kim attends St. Andrew’s Episcopal Middle School in Saratoga.
