Students shoot hoops under the new solar panels recently installed at Waldorf School of the Peninsula in Los Altos.

Waldorf School of the Peninsula, a K-8 school in Los Altos, partnered with SolarCity to commemorate the opening of the school’s new solar-energy system Dec. 6 at the school’s Holiday Faire.

The installation of the system followed Waldorf’s becoming the first Los Altos school certified as a Santa Clara County Green Business by the Bay Area Green Business Program last spring.

The certification process involved tackling a detailed, multipoint checklist that included reducing the toxicity of cleaning supplies used in classrooms, improving recycling practices, installing skylights to reduce electrical demand and composting.

In an effort to “green” its campus, the school worked with SolarCity, a provider of residential and small commercial solar power, which derives from a clean and renewable source – sunlight.

The new system (24 kilowatts) is expected to generate 31,857 kilowatts per hour, covering approximately 64 percent of Waldorf’s usage (kwh) and 85 percent of its PG&E bill.

“As excited as we are about the installation of the solar system and the certification, they are evolutionary steps in our ongoing progress toward a greener campus, a smaller carbon footprint and more sustainable practices,” said Ivan Gaviria, Los Altos resident and Waldorf board member. “By preventing pollution, recycling, conserving water and using energy-efficient equipment and lighting, we have demonstrated that we place a high value on the health of our environment, as well as the health and future of our children.”

Waldorf School of the Peninsula, in its 25th year, is one of more than 160 Waldorf schools in North America and 900 worldwide.

The school’s annual Holiday Faire is a family-oriented event that features candle dipping, games, live entertainment, a puppet show, tree and wreath sales, and a holiday gift store stocked with toys and handcrafts.

i want to work for this company getting schools to get off the grid and save some money so that schools can concentrate on education rather than subsidation.
