St. Francis High sophomore Abby Purnell finished first at last week’s league meet with an all-around score of 38.000.

The St. Francis High gymnastics team hopes to vault to new heights at today’s Central Coast Section Championships. Coach Lynn Horiye said his Lancers not only seek another title – they’ve won 17, including the past 13 – but also the best team score in school history.

“We’re hoping to beat 152.5,” he said. “We’re capable of doing that.”

Another meet, another record for Mountain View High’s Kolisa Nhlapo.

The junior set a meet record in the girls 300-meter hurdles at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League Qualifier Friday, a week after she broke school records in the 100 and 300 hurdles at the De Anza Division trials and finals. Nhlapo pulled away from the competition at the qualifier by finishing the 300 in 44.61 seconds.

Living up to its No. 1 seed, the Mountain View High boys volleyball team advanced to the Central Coast Section Division I final by beating Homestead Saturday.

But it wasn’t easy – the fifth-seeded Mustangs (22-12) took the Spartans (28-1) to five games in the semifinals, played at Independence High in San Jose. After dropping two of the first three sets, Mountain View rallied with wins of 25-16 and 15-11.
