Kickoff meeting scheduled March 7
Los Altos Relay For Life, the fourth annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, isn't until June 23 and 24 at Los Altos High School, but supporters are already gearing up for action.
A kickoff rally is scheduled 7-8:30 p.m. March 7 at Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave.
The opening rally will offer family entertainment reflecting this year's theme, "Cirque du Relay," including a world-champion juggler. Dick Henning, founder and moderator of Foothill College's Celebrity Forum, will deliver the keynote address. Cancer survivors will add their messages of hope to the program.
The rally will offer sign-ups for teams, sponsorships and luminaria, along with more information about relay participation.
Relay teams are forming now. Residents are welcome to register teams at the kickoff event. Teams formed on or before March 7 will have the $150 registration fee waived. They can be formed with friends, family, co-workers, neighbors or community groups, said Alan Russell, this year's event chairman.
Los Altos Relay For Life features teams and individuals walking in relay fashion around the high school track in support of cancer research, education and services.
Through the luminaria ceremony at dusk, the community honors and supports survivors and remembers those who have lost their lives from the disease. Last year, an estimated 325 cancer survivors participated, and the community dedicated more than 5,000 luminaria.
Organizers said more than 1,800 people and 69 teams participated in Los Altos Relay For Life. The 2006 event raised $585,000.
