History Museum fetes Duvenecks’ legacy

The Los Altos History Museum has scheduled “Touching Lives: The Duvenecks of Hidden Villa” Jan. 20 through June 27.

The new exhibition celebrates the lives and achievements of Josephine and Frank Duveneck, legendary Peninsula figures who were social activists, progressive educators and ardent environmentalists.

The exhibition will highlight the Duvenecks’ many contributions to the area, most notably Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills. Today, Hidden Villa is a 1,600-acre wilderness preserve and working farm that hosts summer camps, philanthropic activities and educational programs.

The Los Altos History Museum is located at 51 S. San Antonio Road. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. Admission is free.

Los Altos Library teaches tips, tricks for searching

The Los Altos Library has scheduled a program on how to best use the library’s new online catalog 9 a.m. Jan. 15 at the Los Altos main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

The program will demonstrate how to search for materials, place holds and renew items, in addition to teaching how to use the catalog’s newest features and adding reviews, ratings, tags and lists.

Neutra House continues architecture series

The 2010-2011 Los Altos Neutra House Speaker Series continues through March. Upcoming speakers include:

•Â Jan. 13: Dr. Karen McNeill, “Architect Julia Morgan’s Life and Career.”

•Â Feb. 10: John King, “Significant Urban Projects in San Francisco.”

The presentations begin at 6 p.m. at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos. Receptions follow next door at the Los Altos Neutra House.

LEAD offers intro to civic infrastructure

The Los Altos Community Foundation sponsors the Leadership Education ADvancement Program (LEAD), which offers an in-depth introduction to Los Altos and Los Altos Hills’ civic structures and support agencies for residents interested in learning more about their communities.

The 2011 course opens with a half-day workshop Jan. 15, followed by classes scheduled twice a month, 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays, January through May. There is a one-time fee of $125.

Each session has a focused agenda. Topics include local government, commerce, education, the Los Altos Library and History Museum, social services, health care, the arts and community service organizations.

UPC sponsors healthful living class

Union Presbyterian Church of Los Altos has scheduled “Living Healthy 2011,” a class designed to ring in the new year with a resolution to focus on health and well-being, 6:30 p.m. Mondays, beginning Jan. 10, in the church’s Bailey Hall, 858 University Ave.

Kim Fielding will lead the class. Topics include “Let’s Start Fresh,” “Fitness vs. Fatness,” “Healthy Cooking” and “Body Image and Self-Esteem.”

Fielding has been a partner in a catering firm and is co-authoring a cookbook and wellness guide for college students.

The evening’s topics will be sprinkled with proverbs that hold biblical implications, and each class will feature a variety of appropriate experts, healthful food preparation, exercise demonstrations and video clips.

UPC schedules Christianity Basics Class

Union Presbyterian Church of Los Altos has scheduled a Christianity Basics Class, led by Gosia Hoot, 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 16 and Jan. 23 at the church, 858 University Ave.

Topics include one of life’s most important questions: How should I relate to God? The class is open to anyone with questions about Christianity.
