The Rotary Club of Los Altos is set to announce the nine winners of its 2004 Community Service Scholarships. The winners will receive a total of $16,000 to attend the colleges of their choice this fall. The awards will be presented at a Rotary Club of Los Altos luncheon Thursday.The winners are Jamie Cole of Eastside College Prep School (Barnard); Carol Ip of St. Francis High School, recipient of the Charles Cowan Scholarship for Science and Technology (UCLA); Nana Kanzaveli of Pinewood High School (Chapman); Jeremy Lee of Mountain View High School (U.C. Berkeley); Margarita Liptsin of Los Altos High School (Stanford); Dawn Maxey of Mountain View High School (Stanford); Preeti Piplani of Los Altos High School (U.C. Berkeley); Dina Sandoval of Mountain View Academy (Pacific Union); and Shana White of Mountain View High School (U.C. Davis).Rotary members said the purpose of these annual scholarship awards is to encourage student participation in community service, reward intellectual excellence and provide financial assistance for further education. Scholarships range from $500 to $2,500.Immediate family members of Rotarians are not eligible for Rotary scholarships.Through its own foundation, the Rotary Club of Los Altos is able to support numerous service projects, including the local scholarship program.
