2008 » Issue June 18 » Mountain View On the MoveSmarts, savvy and successThere are many ways to measure a business’ success. Gross revenues, the number of people employed and the demand for the company’s product all gauge a firm’s status on the ladder to Fortune-500 status. But being named one of the nation’s top 50 construction companies by Remodeling Magazine is the scale that says it all for Clarke Schiller II and Brett Schiller, owners of Mountain View-based Schiller Construction Inc. Since 1986, the construction-trade magazine annually recognizes 50 companies that have demonstrated exemplary business practices, unique design and exceptional management skills in the categories of business savvy, fine design, industry impact, marketwise movers and shakers, niches, sales and marketing and teamwork. Vietnam veteran honored for volunteerismThe Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors June 3 honored Mountain View resident and U.S. Navy veteran Walter Dillard as the 2008 “Friend of the Veteran.” For five years, Dillard has volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Hospital, committing his time and compassion particularly to veterans who are sight-impaired, in wheelchairs and or recovering from spinal-cord injuries. ECH district board approves funding for community benefits programIn a move that broadens El Camino’s ability to meet the health-care needs of the underserved in the community, the hospital district board of directors voted unanimously May 14 to allocate funds from the district’s annual property tax receipts to the hospital’s community benefit program. Each year, after required reserves for the district’s capital outlay fund have been met, the remaining funds from the hospital’s maintenance and operations property tax receipts are transferred to the community program. The program stands to gain more than $5 million for the fiscal year ending June 30. Vibha schedules annual Dream MileThe Bay Area chapter of Vibha has scheduled its 10th annual Dream Mile 5K & 10K Run and Carnival 7:30 a.m. to noon June 29 at Shoreline Park, 3070 N. In Our OpinionEditorialWe’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do. There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out. |
