Los Altos’ found-art sculptor Hardy Jones held an open studio event Oct. 24-25 to celebrate the completion of his giant 32-piece chess set, assembled from scraps of metal. Jones held a contest for visitors – guessing the correct weight of the full chess set.
“Official weight of the entire 32-piece chess set is 1,507.5 pounds,” Jones said. “There were 150 entries in the contest, with an enormous range.”
Jane Morton and Jon Czaja tied for the closest guess with 1,500 pounds. After a two-step tiebreaker, Czaja won Jones’ sculpture “Prince of Bavaria.”
Jones declared the event “the most exciting chess event since the 1972 International Chess Federation Final in Reykjavik, Iceland, between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.”
