Foothill wins two games, first by forfeit

Schivo

It’s doubtful the Foothill College women’s basketball team will get an easier win than Friday’s. The Owls won by forfeit due to suspensions that left Chabot with only three eligible players.

“I’ve never had that happen before,” Foothill coach Jody Craig said. “But it couldn’t have come at a better time. The players are mentally and physically drained and need time to regroup before the playoff run.”

Craig has great expectations for the Owls, who rank No. 2 in Northern California. Friday’s forfeit victory, coupled with a 66-55 out-of-division win over Ohlone two days earlier, boosted their record to 22-4 overall.

Host Foothill limited Ohlone to just 20 points in the first half and played the caliber of defense Craig has expected.

“I think we made some real strides defensively,” the coach said. “We held a team to 55 or less in a game – which is one of our goals – and it was a good offensive team.”

The Owls led by 13 at intermission, making a trio of 3-pointers to end it. Addie Schivo nailed the first trey, followed by fellow guards Raeshel Contreras and Stephanie Agostini.

“Closing out the half like that was huge,” Craig said. “It was a pretty good punch in the face.”

Foothill extended its lead to 47-24 five minutes into the second half, but Ohlone (17-6) wouldn’t go away. The visitors cut the deficit to eight with three minutes left and traded baskets with the Owls until the 45-second mark, when Devin Brown broke the press for a layup that put Foothill up 10.

“That took the wind out of their sails,” Craig said.

Schivo finished with a game- and season-high 29 points to lead the Owls and Agostini added 12. Contreras had 10 points and three assists in her first game back from a knee injury.

“She’s about 75 percent but still makes a difference,” Craig said of her point guard, who logged 15 minutes. “She did well.”

Foothill, tied for first in the Coast Conference North Division, is scheduled to visit Las Positas 5 p.m. today.
