Pilgrim Haven hosts health forum on strokes

Pilgrim Haven retirement community has scheduled a health forum, “Are You Heading for a Stroke?” 7-8:30 p.m. May 15 in Fellowship Hall, 373 Pine Lane, Los Altos.

The forum, the fourth in a series on health issues relevant to the aging population, will address symptoms and prevention of stroke, acute treatment of stroke and rehabilitation after a stroke.

Dr. Sheila Humphries, Pilgrim Haven medical director, will moderate a panel from El Camino Hospital’s Stroke Center, which will include Dr. Peter Fung, medical director; Sherril Hopper, interim stroke coordinator; Debbie Cohen, speech therapist; and Mariann Jones, senior physical therapist. Dancing on tap for federated women

The Federated Woman’s Club of Los Altos has scheduled the Donna Frankel Dancers to entertain at its May 7 meeting at Michaels at Shoreline restaurant in Mountain View.

Frankel, an independent dance instructor, has taught all ages from preschool to seniors. She has taught a variety of styles.

A business meeting is scheduled 11 a.m., followed by lunch at noon and the program at 1 p.m. Guests are welcome with a reservation. For more information, call 948-3553.

Home and garden tour benefits history museum

The Los Altos History Museum invites visitors to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend at its seventh annual Spring Home & Garden Tour, scheduled 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10. Spanning a century, five homes dating from 1905 to 2005 will be on tour, plus a Tudor mansion on the premier evening the night before. Tour proceeds benefit the Los Altos History Museum.

Tickets are $40 ($30 for museum members) and include refreshments and a garden boutique. A premier evening gala the night before at the Los Altos Hills estate, Stonebrook Court, is also offered with a separate ticket.

Gallery 9 features artists for open studio event

Gallery 9 is featuring seven of its member artists in the 2008 Silicon Valley Open Studios, a Bay Area non-profit event promoting local artists, during which more 200 artists open their studios, galleries and homes to the public the first three weekends in May.

Local participating artists include Maria Koretz, Pat Kovattana, Patricia Machmiller, Joyce Savre, Shigemi Sanders, Cherise Thompson and Nancy Wulff.

The public can meet the artists 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 10 and 11 at Gallery 9, 143 Main St., Los Altos.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

Pathways run/walk set for Los Altos Hills

Los Altos Hills has scheduled the seventh annual Los Altos Hills Pathways run/walk May 10, starting and finishing at Westwind Barn, 27210 Altamont Road. A 5K and 10K run/walk is scheduled for 9 a.m. and a 1-mile children’s fun run will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The 5K/10K and 1-mile fun run courses are hilly trails on Los Altos Hills pathways through Byrne Preserve. Both events are open to runners or walkers of all ages.
