It was a good news/bad news day for the Los Altos High track and field team. The host Eagles beat Milpitas on the boys side March 19, but their girls lost for the third time this season.

The Los Altos boys prevailed 79-48, improving to 2-1 in the SCVAL De Anza Division, while the girls lost 65-62.

David Wobber and Charles Olaires paced the Los Altos boys, winning two events each. Wobber won the 110 (17.95 seconds) and 300 hurdles (43.80); Olaires placed first in the shot put (47 feet, 5 inches) and discus (125-4 1/2). The Eagles’ other individual wins came from Davis Zirpolo in the 100 dash (12.24), Eric Safai in the 800 run (2:05.89), Roy Abousamra in the 200 dash (23.93), Brad Greathouse in the high jump (5-10) and Chris Imprescia in the triple jump (41-7).

The Los Altos boys also swept the relays, winning the 4×100 in 45.15 and the 4×400 in 3:42.43.

For the Los Altos girls, Martina Mickos and Kristin Rimbach led the way by both winning two events. Mickos took first in the 110 hurdles (16.57) and 200 dash (26.53); Rimbach won the high jump (5-4) and triple jump (32-4 1/4). Alyssa Biondi added a win in the 100 dash (12.94) and Molly McShane in the 400 run (1:04.13). The Eagles also won the 4×100 relay (49.30).

Baseball

Mountain View fell 11-4 to Santa Clara Thursday, sinking to 1-4 in the SCVAL El Camino Division.

The host Spartans were out-hit 15-6 and committed four errors. Jake Robins took the loss.

Valley Christian-Dublin beat Pinewood 11-0 March 18 in a game that ended in five innings on the mercy rule. The host Panthers dropped to 0-1 in the Private Schools Athletic League and 0-3 overall.

Mountain View went 2-1 at the Charlie Miguel Tournament, held Friday and Saturday at Twin Creeks.

The Spartans lost 9-1 to Leigh in their opening game, then bounced back the next day to beat Soquel 9-6 and Carmel 8-2.

Kendra Vanek pitched all three games, earning two wins.

Natalie Warmbrodt and Nicole Averalo belted home runs against Leigh and Soquel, respectively; Vanek and Victoria Hayward each had three hits against Soquel; McColl Matthews and Moorea Matthews notched three hits apiece versus Carmel.

Boys tennis

Playing against league-leading Saratoga Thursday, Gunn “almost pulled off the upset of the year,” coach Jim Gorman said.

The Titans fell 4-3 to the visiting Falcons in an SCVAL De Anza Division match decided at No. 2 doubles, where Saratoga’s Aditya Joshi and Andrew Hsieh defeated Gunn’s Andrew Meyer and Bhrat Reddy in three sets.

Two days earlier, the Titans dispatched Los Altos 6-1. The visiting Eagles’ lone win came at No. 2 doubles, where Hayden Smith and Neil Swarup topped Meyer and Reddy in straight sets.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
