Peninsula symphony holds fashion fundraiser
The South Bay Guild of the Peninsula Symphony Auxiliary has scheduled “Symphony of Fashions,” a luncheon and fashion show fundraiser, 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Michaels at Shoreline, 2960 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View.
Proceeds will benefit the 2008 Music Merit Awards, granted to high school music students in the South Bay. Elise Sugarman of Mountain View High School and Mary Beth Wilhelm of St. Francis received 2007 merit awards.

French fair scheduled in Los Altos
“A Day in France,” the inaugural Peninsula French fair, is scheduled 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hillview Community Center, Room A, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos.
The event will feature antiques, original works by French artists and an array of gourmet food samples. Items for sale will include paintings, jewelry, handmade clothing, home decorations, toys and wall decals.
Ten percent of sales will benefit the non-profit organization Partners for New Generations.

Gallery 9 showcases Palo Alto artist
Gallery 9, 143 Main St. in downtown Los Altos, exhibits the works of Palo Alto artist Naomi Mindelzun through Sunday.
Mindelzun, a native of New York City and a graduate of New York University’s art program, focuses on waterworks from a variety of different maritime locales, real and imagined. Other works depict animals and industrial structures.
Mindelzun works in a variety of media, including hot wax, acrylics, oil, aquarelles and pastels.
Gallery 9 hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Wildcat Adventure visits Foothill College
Wildcat specialists Rob and Barbara Dicely have scheduled a Wildcat Adventure presentation 2 p.m. Sunday at Foothill College, 12345 S. El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills.
The presentation, sponsored by the non-profit Wild Cat Education and Conservation Fund, will feature five live wildcats, which could include a cougar, African leopard, cheetah, king cheetah, snow leopard, ocelot, Siberian lynx, Canada lynx, serval or caracal. Each cat is shown onstage as information about its habits, habitat and survival issues is shared.
The presentation will take place in Room 5015, adjacent to Parking Lot No. 6. Admission is $10/adults, $5/children under 12.

Library hosts lecture on tolerance
The Los Altos Library and Los Altos Voices for Peace have scheduled Audrey Shabbas, director of Arab World and Islamic Resources, to speak on “Beyond Tolerance: When Muslims, Christians and Jews Built a Great Civilization in Spain” 7 p.m. April 2 in the main library program room, 13 S. San Antonio Road.
Shabbas has more than 25 years’ experience in teaching, curriculum development and teacher training on the Middle East and Islam. She has conducted more than 40 workshops in school districts, county and state offices of education, museums and universities throughout the United States. A longtime member of the National Council for Social Studies, she has served as a presidential appointee to its Equity and Social Justice Committee and as chairwoman of the International Human Rights Education Special Interest Group.
The lecture is free and open to the public.

Statue of Liberty arrives in Los Altos
The Los Altos Library has scheduled an exhibition of local watercolorist Laurie Barna’s “2006-2007 Liberty Series” 10 a.m. April 2 through 9 p.m. April 29.
This is the first public exhibition from Barna’s continuing series of watercolors depicting the Statue of Liberty as still life. Barna said the Liberty Series has given her an artistic voice to communicate her strong feelings about Lady Liberty and America through exploring themes such as peace, patriotism, lost liberties and the consequences of Sept. 11. She invites viewers to think, to question and to remember.

Bird experts land in Los Altos Hills
Hidden Villa and the Los Altos Hills Open Space Committee have scheduled “Bringing Back the Birds,” a program emphasizing the importance of riparian habitat for birds and what can be done to bring them back to Bay Area streams, 7-9 p.m. April 2 at Los Altos Hills Town Hall, 26379 W. Fremont Road.
Presenters Melissa Pitkin, education and outreach director of the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, and Bob Power, executive director of the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, will discuss how birds are excellent indicators of environmental health and why their populations are declining at an alarming rate throughout the region and country.
Attendees will receive a free copy of Point Reyes Bird Observatory’s “Pocket Guide to Birds of San Francisco Bay.”

Quota International hosts fashion show
Quota International of Mountain View/Los Altos has scheduled its annual spring fashion show, “April in Paris,” 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 5 at Michaels at Shoreline restaurant, 2960 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View.
The event will include a social hour with no-host bar, silent auction, luncheon, program, fashion show and raffle. The Yum Yum Tree of Los Altos will present the fashions.
Quota International of Mountain View/Los Altos was established in 1948 as a non-profit community service organization committed to three primary areas: disadvantaged women and children, hearing and screening programs and a scholarship program for the deaf or hearing impaired or someone who seeks an education to serve the hearing impaired. The club provides services to other organizations in the community.
Cost is $35 per person, including lunch.

Hospital foundation sponsors annual gala
The El Camino Hospital Foundation has scheduled its annual gala, “Spotlight on Our Future,” 7 p.m. April 5 at the Computer History Museum, 1401 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View.
The black-tie-optional evening will celebrate technology at El Camino Hospital, known for its adoption of pioneering software and cutting-edge equipment to improve patient care.
Proceeds will benefit the El Camino Hospital Foundation, which raises money for the hospital’s programs, including the Cancer Center and the Heart and Vascular Institute, and for the purchase of the latest medical equipment, such as the recently acquired da Vinci S HD surgical robot.
Tickets, which include dinner and entertainment by singer Pasquale Esposito, are $500 per person, $350 of which is tax deductible.

Prayer breakfast scheduled Thursday
Walt Wilson and Shirley Pounds are scheduled to speak at the 14th annual Silicon Valley Prayer Breakfast Thursday to share how their careers have been built on a personal faith. The theme of this year’s event is “Finding Meaning in Life.”
Wilson is a Silicon Valley businessman who started his career with Fairchild Semiconductor and was an early employee of Apple Computer. Pounds is director of CityTeam Ministries in San Francisco.
The Silicon Valley Prayer Breakfast, formerly the Los Altos Prayer Breakfast, was started by volunteers from Los Altos and continues to be led by community members.
Thursday’s Silicon Valley Prayer Breakfast is scheduled to begin 7 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel, 2700 Mission Blvd., Santa Clara. Tickets are $35 per person.
