Local school district officials at the elementary and high school levels are preparing for the worst, as preliminary estimates report that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed mid-year budget cuts could reach as high as $600 per student.
The proposed cuts, totaling approximately $300 per student initially, would cost the Los Altos School District $1.4 million and the Mountain-View Los Altos Union High School District more than $1 million. The district won’t know for sure until Schwarzenegger releases his official budget numbers Jan. 10.
Dirty work: Stories of city maintenance
Downtown Los Altos buzzed with workers this week and last as the city tried to make last-minute fixes before disappearing into the background, letting seasonal shopping and events take the stage.
“We’re trying to get all our work downtown done before the holiday season,” Maintenance Services Manager Brian McCarthy said.
MV can’t stop Mitty machine
There was no stopping the Mitty machine. The girls volleyball team that sweeps foes like a Dyson does dust bunnies beat Mountain View High in straight games Saturday in the Central Coast Section Division II final at Independence High.
But Mountain View at least made the machine work for its 25-12, 25-22, 25-16 victory. The second-seeded Spartans (28-11) didn’t surrender after top seed Mitty (37-1) dominated them in the first game, in which the Monarchs scored nine consecutive points.
TC Holiday Fund profiles: RotaCare, Hidden Villa, Children’s Health Council
The Town Crier Holiday Fund annually disburses financial donations to area non-profit organizations that benefit those in need. This year, 18 organizations will receive funds. Following are profiles of three local recipients and the programs they intend to use the funds for.
Foothill-De Anza Community College District will be forced to cut an estimated $8 million from its current-year budget and turn away hundreds, perhaps thousands, of returning and prospective students if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s mid-year proposals to reduce community college budgets are enacted.
The proposed $332 million in cuts would impact nearly 263,000 students at California’s 110 community colleges, according to an analysis by the Community College League of California – the equivalent of shutting down the entire University of California system.

President Abraham Lincoln established the first national day of Thanksgiving in November 1863, just months following the devastating victory by the Union at Gettysburg.
In his proclamation, Lincoln wrote, “To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of almighty God.”
