Grand View League, a fundraising branch of the American Cancer Society, has scheduled the 12th annual California Ball 6-11 p.m. Sept. 29 at Fremont Hills Country Club, 12889 Viscaino Place, Los Altos Hills.

Formerly known as the Cattle Baron’s Ball, the event has raised nearly $10 million over the past 11 years for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.

This year’s event, co-chaired by Lynn Reed and Bess Wiersema, features the theme “Back in the Saddle.”

“We are absolutely thrilled at the opportunity to host this event at Fremont Hills Country Club,” Wiersema said. “The club and venue are absolutely spectacular and fit perfectly with our theme of celebrating a true, outdoor, best-of-the-West experience.”

The evening will feature Western music, “cowboy” cuisine, games and silent and live auctions.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

Recent news beyond Los Altos has been less than sunny, let’s face it: The national economy remains shaky, gas is officially more than $4 a gallon, the death toll from last week’s cyclone disaster in Myanmar could exceed 100,000 and another disaster close behind it – the 7.8 earthquake that hit China on Monday, killing nearly 9,000 people.

All the more reason to count our blessings on the local scene. Certainly, the high quality of life in Los Altos is well documented, but here’s another thing to consider: Numerous plans and projects under way bid to make this community even better.
