Main Street Singers offer high hopes

We recently had the privilege of hearing a performance by the Los Altos High School Main Street Singers.

Their performance, harmonies and choral discipline were outstanding. The selection of holiday-related music was classic.

This group of young persons is a credit to the high school and our city, thanks to the dedicated efforts of their music director, Mark Shaull.

All of Los Altos benefits from outstanding youth groups such as this. These young people give us high hopes for the future.

Los Altos

Magically united

At the Dec. 11 Los Altos School District board meeting, Margot Harrigan opened the meeting with her usual request that all present kindly turn off their cell phones.

On this night, she offered a free “pass” to Superintendent Tim Justus, whose daughter was due to go into labor at any moment.

A few minutes into the meeting, Tim’s cell phone went off. Much to everyone’s dismay, he insisted on finishing his response to a question about the agenda item being discussed.

Finally, he played back the message in what was now a very quiet room.

After what seemed an eternity, Tim calmly told us that the call was indeed from his daughter, Jenny, but that she was not yet in labor.

For one brief moment, everyone in attendance at an LASD board meeting was magically united, oblivious to our differences, as we awaited word on the impending arrival of the superintendent’s first grandchild.

Two days later, at 7 pounds, 11 ounces, Avery was born. Mother and daughter are doing great.

Avery, we owe you one!

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
