Education foundation supports CUSD programs

The Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation Board of Directors has committed $1.8 million to the Cupertino Union School District’s arts and technology programs. The commitment includes a $400,000 annual grant for the next three years to maintain district classroom music and arts programs, and a one-time allocation of $650,000 to support a districtwide technology upgrade, technology pilot programs and instructional staff development in integrating technology into the curriculum and the classroom.

Foothill begins winter registration

Winter quarter registration has begun for Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Foothill offers specialized certificates, associate degrees, job-skills courses and general-education course requirements needed to transfer to four-year universities. Most Foothill courses are transferable to California State University and University of California campuses as well as private colleges and universities.

Continuing students (those who were enrolled in fall classes at Foothill) can register online or by phone through Jan. 7. New and former students can register online or by phone Monday through Jan. 7.

Foothill’s winter quarter classes begin Jan. 8 and run through March 30, unless otherwise noted in the Schedule of Classes. The schedule is available at www.foothill.edu.

California residents pay $13 per unit for Foothill classes. A full range of student support services is available, including financial aid, academic counseling, child care and tutoring.

New and continuing students can register for classes, review the class schedule, pay enrollment fees, purchase parking permits and buy textbooks online at www.foothill.edu. To register by phone, call 917-0509 or (408) 777-9394.

Pinewood hosts student concert

Pinewood School has scheduled a concert 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 2094 Grant Road in Mountain View.

The Pinewood Singers, the advanced choir, the junior high choir and the band will perform.

There is a suggested donation of $5.

Covington choruses to perform holiday concert

Covington Elementary School’s Daybreakers and Coyote Choruses have scheduled their holiday concert 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the multipurpose room, 205 Covington Rd., Los Altos.

First- through sixth-graders will sing a variety of songs and play percussion instruments to celebrate the holiday season.

Admission is free.

MVLA schedules information night

The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District has scheduled a high school information night for parents and eighth-grade students entering Los Altos High School in the fall 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Los Altos High gym, 201 Almond Ave.

Administrators, counselors and teachers will be on hand to answer questions about curriculum, extra- and co-curricular activities, athletics and performing arts programs offered at the school.

Child care and Spanish translation will be provided.

Jewish Day School offers Hanukkah events

The Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School has scheduled Hanukkah crafts and stories for children, 3-5, 11 a.m. to noon Sunday at Linden Tree Children’s Recordings & Books, 170 State St., Los Altos.

Hausner kindergarten teachers Arlene Herman and Ziona Tassa will read stories, while art specialist Dorothy Thursby will organize crafts activities.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
