Small fire

Nov. 10, 11:35 a.m., 300 block of Second Street: A small fire ignited outside a store. The source was some work equipment left outside, according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department. Property damages were estimated at $1,500.

Residential burglaries

Nov. 7, between 8:45 a.m. and 1:55 p.m., 1300 block of Siesta Drive: A resident reported that the rear sliding-glass windows from the kitchen and living room were found open upon return to the residence. The victim believed the windows were secured prior to leaving home. It appears the suspect used an unknown tool to pry open windows. A laptop computer was reported missing.

Call the Los Altos Police Department at 947-2776 to report any suspicious activity or vehicles.

Nov. 10, 1:33 p.m., 800 block of Santa Rita Avenue: A resident reported that while he was out to lunch, someone broke into his home and stole $9,000 worth of jewelry, a 400-lb. safe and camera equipment. Upon his return home, the resident found a door open and his large-screen TV on his porch. He called police, who are looking for two vehicles, a mid-sized pickup truck and a utility van with no side windows. Both were reported to be in the area at the time of the crime.

County water district warns of wet winter

The Santa Clara Valley Water District is reminding county residents to plan for what may be a long, wet winter, said the water district’s spokesman Mike DiMarco.

The message is being delivered in three forms: a mass mailing to residents with properties that could be affected by flooding, a flood-awareness campaign and a public meeting with emergency managers and public works officials in the county to coordinate responses to flooding, should it occur.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
