STEPHEN JOHN PAVLINA

On October 24, 2006, Santa Clara Valley lost one of its prominent sons who contributed to agricultural production when the valley was known more for its fruit orchards than electronic chip-making. Stephen John Pavlina passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 79 after battling Shy-Drager Syndrome for more than four years. Surrounded by his family, his suffering finally ended to be with the Lord. “Hardworking hands at rest”. God broke our hearts to prove to us “He only takes the best”.

From the Great Depression and his parents who emigrated from their homeland, Yugoslavia then, Croatia now, to the United States; he learned at a young age the value of hard work, honesty, respect, and support from family and friends. He aspired to live his whole life guided by these values and he consistently preached the same to his family, friends, and co-workers. Although he regretted never completing high school, he believed that our formal education system offered significant opportunities for everyone. He considered its acquisition an ongoing quest that was critical to life and success. He often remarked, “You learn something every day or you are not living”. From his humble upbringing, he never forgot his roots and the struggles he experienced throughout life as well. As a result, he exhibited a special compassion for the impoverished and the less fortunate.

Stephen was born June 11, 1927, in Mt. View, CA. attending local schools. With the advent of World War II and the ensuing shortage of labor, he abandoned high school early to help his father, Louis (Luka), and mother, Kate (Baba), tending to orchards of cherries and apricots in the Santa Clara Valley and later orchards of prunes, pears, and peaches in the Marysville District 10 area north of Sacramento. Stephen worked both areas for almost twenty years. “PAVLINA BEAUTY CHERRIES” pride of the family, was the brand name of their cherries that were packed fresh and sold from a fruit stand on the El Camino Real in Mt. View and in the city markets of New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. In the early 1970’s, Stephen sold his orchard in Marysville and permanently returned to the Santa Clara Valley to develop and manage his property of commercial offices and residential housing in Sunnyvale, CA. As an orchardist turned land developer, he witnessed, participated, and benefited from the economic evolution of Santa Clara Valley that transformed it from an agricultural paradise to what we know today as Silicon Valley.

His passion for life was reflected in his love of his cherished family. Stephen was devoted to his wife of 58 years Virginia (Gini). As beloved father of Steve, Julie, and Katherine (deceased); dear father-in-law of Daniel San Giorgio and Marlene Sue Pavlina; caring grandfather of Luka, Kyla, Nikola, Nicola, and Andreas; he truly enjoyed his family and shared numerous gatherings with his friends.

A private interment was already held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Los Altos, CA, with only the immediate family in attendance. A memorial mass celebrating his life with family and friends, followed by a private wake, was held Saturday, November 4.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 473 Lincoln Avenue, Los Altos, CA. 94022 or to Pathways Hospice.
