Registrar updates election information

Polls for the 2006 general election will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The ballot includes decisions on the next California governor, taxes and propositions that will affect roads, schools, water and the environment.

Voters can locate their polling places by visiting the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters Web site at www.sccvote.org. In addition, each voter’s polling place is listed on the back of the sample ballot. The Los Altos City Clerk’s office will be available for assistance at 947-2720 or 947-2611.

For an easy-to-read guide on the candidates and propositions, visit www.easyvoter.org.

For up-to-the-minute information on your polling place, your ballot and candidates and measures, visit SmartVoter.org, a nonpartisan Web site sponsored by the League of Women Voters of California.

Early voting is offered at the Santa Clara County Elections Division located at 1555 Berger Drive, Bldg. 2, in San Jose. For more information, call the Registrar of Voters, (408) 299-8683. Early voting is available 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Manslaughter suspect enters plea

Chevelle Bailey, 41, could face up to 28 years in prison after pleading no contest Oct. 24 to vehicular manslaughter and two other felonies. Bailey allegedly hit and killed bicyclist John Peckham of Mountain View in the Palo Alto Hills last month. Court records allege that Bailey was high on methamphetamine and alcohol while driving 80 to 90 mph on Old Page Mill Road.

Supervising Deputy District Attorney Jay Boyarsky said he would seek the maximum sentence.

“The evidence against Mr. Bailey is strong,” Boyarsky said. “The best thing Mr. Bailey could have done is accept responsibility as soon as possible.”
