Los Altos High’s Kellen McColl makes a first-down catch in Friday’s 28-0 win over Mills.

It wasn’t hard to pick out the definitive play in Los Altos High’s 28-0 football win over Mills.

With the host Eagles leading 7-0 in the closing minutes of the first half, Mills went for it on fourth-and-1 from the 50 - and they were denied.

“That was the turning point of the game,” Los Altos coach Jeff Kalb said.

The Eagles took advantage of the field position, reaching the end zone a few plays later. Danny Young’s 22-yard pass to Kellen McColl set up Jamar Watson’s 4-yard touchdown run in the final minute.

Los Altos (3-0) extended its lead to 21-0 early in the third quarter of Friday’s game. After Mills lost a fumble on its opening drive, Young connected with Ben Kohl for a 15-yard touchdown on first down.

“Danny did a great job scrambling out and finding Ben in the corner,” Kalb said.

Young finished 5-of-10 passing for 71 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran in a score. Watson rushed 20 times for 75 yards; running mate DJ Archie ran for 61 yards and scored on a 22-yard catch.

The Eagles face rival Mountain View at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Foothill College.

Mountain View is coming off a 37-7 win at Soquel Friday that improved its record to 2-1.

“We played fairly well,” coach Dan Navarro said. “We started fast and never looked back.”

Soquel (3-1) fumbled the opening kickoff, and Mountain View scored on its first play from scrimmage - a 12-yard run by Brandon Hamilton. The senior finished with 164 yards rushing.

Just before halftime, Arthur Washington picked up a fumble and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown that pushed Mountain View’s lead to 27-0.

St. Francis (3-0-1) topped host St. Mary’s of Stockton 20-14 Friday on Robert Enquist’s 84-yard interception return in the fourth quarter. Ryan Van Amburg and Scott Zipse scored the Lancers’ other touchdowns on runs of 2 and 8 yards, respectively.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
