Olympic figure skater Peggy Fleming is scheduled to speak at the Pathways Hospice Foundation 16th Annual One from the Heart Awards Breakfast 7:30 a.m. Oct. 19 at the Crowne Plaza CabaƱa Hotel in Palo Alto.

Fleming, who won a gold medal at the 1968 games, will share her life experiences as a national figure, breast cancer survivor and hospice family member.

“Both of my husband’s parents were cared for in their final weeks by hospice workers in Texas,” Fleming said. “They offered so much comfort to all of us.”

The foundation will honor John and Susan Sobrato with the John W. Gardner Visionary Award for their innovative philosophy of philanthropy. Rosemary Maresca, a nurse and Palo Alto Medical Foundation breast cancer educator for 41 years, will receive the One from the Heart Award. The Rafael family of Cupertino will receive the Frances C. Arrillaga Humanitarian Award for their efforts on behalf of Pathways patients and families.

Pathways, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2007, served more than 1,000 families in Los Altos and surrounding communities last year and nearly 7,000 in the Bay Area.
