Behind a solid running game and strong defense, the Los Altos High football team overcame a sluggish start to rout Harbor 48-3 Saturday.
The Eagles, who beat Evergreen Valley 28-0 the previous week, improved to 2-0.
Los Altos took control of Saturday’s home opener in the second quarter when senior running back Jamar Watson broke free for a 15-yard touchdown run. On the next series, Robert Guadagnini scored on a 2-yard run.
By halftime, Los Altos led 20-3 and never looked back.
“We had some miscommunication in the huddle early on,” Eagles quarterback Danny Young said. “However, we came out and did a great job in the second half.”
Young had his offense humming in the second half. Los Altos came out firing and scored on its first four possessions.
“Our linemen and running backs all did a great job,” said Young, who was 3-for-7 passing for 55 yards and touchdown. “We executed well.”
The Eagles’ second-half scoring began with Guadagnini finding the end zone on a 33-yard scamper that extended the advantage to 27-3. This put the winless Pirates, outscored 98-3 over their two games, in a huge hole.
Harbor had no answer for Watson, who rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
“He is a hard worker, and when he gets the ball, he’s 110 percent every play,” Young said of Watson.
Los Altos’ other running backs - Dion Taylor, Darrell Archie, Devin Matthews and Justin Arcune - totaled 272 yards on the ground.
The Eagles’ defense was as big a factor as the offense. The unit forced three turnovers.
Los Altos’ second-half effort was somewhat marred by three personal fouls. Harbor was flagged for two personal fouls and had a player ejected.
The Eagles will have a short week to prepare for its second-to-last non-league game, scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Friday against visiting Mills.
