‘78 murder suspect fights extradition

Scott Schultz, arrested in the 1978 killing of Los Altos teenager Laura Beyerly, announced last week that he will fight extradition from Colorado to Santa Clara County. Santa Clara County prosecutors will present evidence to a judge in Larimer County, Colo. requesting his extradition.

If the extradition is successful, Schultz, who was Beyerly’s former boyfriend, would appear in juvenile court so that a judge can determine whether he should be tried as an adult for murder. Schultz, 45, was a juvenile at the time of the crime.

No suspects were charged after Beyerly’s body was found in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1979, and Schultz was never named as a suspect. Santa Clara District Attorney’s investigators said attention turned to Schultz when the case was reopened last year based on witness testimony and the obscure location of Beyerly’s body, which was found near land owned by Schultz’s uncle.

Firm selected for wireless network

Silicon Valley Metro Connect, a group of Silicon Valley high-tech companies, won the contract to build a regional wireless network across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

Los Altos recently joined other local cities including Los Altos Hills in participating in the project, which stemmed from non-profit Joint Venture Silicon Valley’s Wireless Silicon Valley effort. The goal is to extend a high-speed outdoor wireless network throughout the valley, to benefit homeowners, businesses and local municipal and safety agencies. Google premiered a similar project in Mountain View earlier this summer.

The group selected SV Metro Connect for its wireless proposal, which includes 30,000 planned access points at a cost of about $1,500 each, a total of $45 million.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
