Mountain View High fullback Mark Good breaks loose for a long run last Friday against Gunn. The Spartans won 48-12.

If you went to see a local high school football team play last Friday in hopes of catching a close game with a dramatic ending, you probably left disappointed.

There was little reason to stick around until the end of the games involving Los Altos, Mountain View and St. Francis highs. Their games were over before they were over, as each of these local teams won in a rout.

Los Altos opened its season with a 28-0 win at Evergreen.

“We came out in a workman-like manner and did what we needed to do,” Los Altos coach Jeff Kalb said.

The Eagles racked up 351 yards of offense, 248 of them on the ground. Running back Jamar Watson rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.

Tight end Kellen McColl scored the other touchdown on a 12-yard pass from Danny Young, “who played a very smart game and made good decisions on the field,” Kalb said. Young was 8-for-12 passing for 103 yards.

Defensively, the Eagles never let Evergreen move the ball beyond their 30 and held the host team to 80 yards. Ben Kohl made two interceptions for Los Altos.

The Eagles host Harbor (0-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Spartan spoilers

Mountain View went to 1-0 and Gunn fell to 0-2.

Halfback Bobby Enquist and quarterback Ryan Van Amburg each rushed for a pair of touchdowns in St. Francis’ 36-13 win at South San Francisco. Nicholas Quaglia added a 40-yard scoring run for the Lancers, who last week opened the season with a tie against visiting Oak Grove.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
