Fire on Regent Drive

Santa Clara County firefighters responded Friday to an early morning fire at a Los Altos home on Regent Drive.

The two residents reported the fire at 4 a.m., when flames broke out near their garage. Fire crews from nearby Loyola, Almond and El Monte fire stations responded promptly to the call and declared the blaze a 2-alarm fire because of its close proximity to other homes. The flames were extinguished shortly after 6 a.m.

Tom Walsh, senior deputy fire marshal at the Santa Clara County Fire Department said that approximately 30 percent of the two-story property was destroyed. Damage was estimated between $200,000 and $300,000.

Walsh said the two residents and their dog were able to get out without injury.

“It looks like it started in the garage, but investigators are still looking at the scene,” he said.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
