Viva Italiano owners Roberto and Otto Barbosa never imagined growing up in Brazil that they would work side by side one day in the food business.

But Roberto developed a distinct passion for tomato sauces and Italian seasonings when he mentored under the head chef at San Francisco’s Bay City Bar and Grill for seven years. When a position opened up to cook at his brother’s restaurant in Pacifica, the transition seemed natural.

For the past 22 years, the brothers have dedicated and worked 12 hours a day nearly every day of the week in the Viva Italiano restaurant location. The popularity of the Pacifica spot prompted the Barbosas to bring their traditional Italian food and pizzas to Los Altos.

“The people here are really warm. I hope to stay a long time,” Roberto said, alluding to the superstition that the historic high-turnover rate of Viva Italiano’s location might eventually catch up with them, as well.

Their menu is extensive and includes a variety of pizzas, salads and pastas. Spaghetti carbonara has already become a customer favorite in Los Altos, Roberto said.

“I love the creative part of the food business - the presentation, developing sauces,” he said.

Despite the long hours and time he must spend away from his two young children, Roberto said the most rewarding aspect of his job remains the same.

“When people come in and compliment us, that’s the motivation we get to keep going. It’s very encouraging,” he said.

Since they moved into their location in November, Viva Italiano continues to win the taste palates of local customers.

“We hope the smell of basil and garlic travels down the street,” Roberto said.

Viva Italiano is located at 100 State St. For more information, call 949-2400.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
