Sean Scott had a big day for the Oaks in Sunday’s sweep of Seaside. He had four hits, including an inside-the-park home run.

So much for the Palo Alto Oaks enjoying Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of the Seaside Bombers. A day later, general manager Steve Espinoza was already worried about the Oaks’ next league opponent.

“We have some tough games coming up this weekend against the Smokey’s,” he said, referring to the Sacramento team the Oaks face Saturday and Sunday. “Our mettle will be tested there.”

In recent weeks, the Oaks have had fewer tests than a sixth-grader on summer vacation. The semipro baseball team of college players, including graduates of St. Francis and Homestead highs, has had its way with the rest of the San Jose WBA Stan Musial League. Over their six league games this month, the Oaks have outscored their opponents 49-18 to remain undefeated. They roughed up visiting Seaside 10-0 and 14-3 Sunday at Baylands Athletic Center.

Starter Matt Campbell “continued his excellence,” Espinoza said, pitching six scoreless innings in the first game against Seaside. He is 6-0 for the season.

Campbell received plenty of offensive support, with the Oaks jumping out to a 9-0 lead by the fourth inning. Palo Alto totaled 12 hits, including two each from Gabe Duran, Sean Scott, Jason Kleinhoffer and Homestead product Brian Beres. Scott had an inside-the-park home run and Kleinhoffer hit two doubles and drove in three runs.

The Oaks collected 14 hits in the second game, highlighted by two homers from Duran. The shortstop also had four RBIs and scored four runs. Max Pinto added an inside-the-park homer; Scott, Kleinhoffer and Chris Budelli had two hits each.

Colby Henard earned the win.

Before traveling to Sacramento, Palo Alto (10-0 league, 17-3 overall) plays a non-league game at 5:30 p.m today against the Diamondbacks at De Anza College.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
