Underground teen center gears up for summer

The Underground, a free, drop-in facility for students entering grades 7-12, is open Tuesdays through Saturdays noon to 6 p.m. The teen hangout offers a variety of recreational activities for a fun, safe place to relax. The Underground boasts pool tables, air hockey, foosball, Xbox, PS2, music and computers for gaming. The Underground also sells snacks for a small fee.

The Underground is located below the Garden House in Shoup Park off University Avenue in Los Altos.

Former MVHS principal moves on to Foothill

Pat Hyland, former principal of Mountain View High School, has been selected as dean of Foothill College faculty and staff, succeeding Warren Hurd.

Hyland is an experienced administrator with a background in organizational and staff development. She will supervise the hiring and tenure review process at Foothill.

A native of East Palo Alto, Hyland earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from San Jose State. She began her teaching career in the East Side Union High School District.

Host families needed for Chinese students

Families are needed to host students from China attending De Anza College for two weeks this summer. The host dates are July 18-30, and reimbursement is $600 for room and board.

Los Altos sponsors summer sports camps

The Los Altos Recreation Department is holding summer camps that focus on sports, games and activities designed to foster a sense of belonging, sportsmanship, teamwork and a positive self-image. A variety of outdoor games and activities will provide an opportunity for children to have fun and expend their energy in a positive and active manner.

There are eight one-week sessions. The camps run Mondays through Fridays 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Hillview baseball field. The camps are designed for children ages 6-12. The price for a week is $127.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
