Carolyn Parker, an expert rosarian and book writer, will be the keynote speaker at Filoli’s upcoming Flowers in the Home event July 18 through July 22.

Filoli has scheduled “An Evening with the Roses” 4-6 p.m. July 20, a talk by Bay Area author, designer and avid gardener Carolyn Parker.

Parker, writer of the visually stunning “R is for Rose: Reflections from a Passionate Rose Lover” will discuss her new book and give a special slide presentation on rose history and horticulture. Her talk will be followed by a wine and appetizer reception which includes an after-hours visit to Filoli’s beautiful rose garden.

Parker’s speech will highlight Filoli’s Flowers in the Home event set for 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 18 through July 22. To see her book, visit www.rosesfromatoz.com.

For the home gardener and the decorator enthusiast alike, Flowers in the Home explores plant-themed, daily activities and introduces visitors to creative projects such as making tasty herb infusions and creating natural plant dyes. It is free to members and non-members with paid admission to Filoli.

The event also includes floral design demonstrations, cutting garden tours and unique ways to incorporate flowers with food when entertaining and dining.

During Flowers in the Home, Filoli will host its 8th Annual Botanical Art Exhibition which includes more than 60 plant portraits by artists throughout the country.

Filoli, located in Woodside, is recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century. The 654-acre property includes a 36,000 square-foot mansion furnished with antiques and decorative art, as well as 16 acres of European-inspired gardens which showcase an exquisite horticultural collection. Established as a private residence in 1917 and opened to the public in 1976 to promote cultural and horticultural endeavors, Filoli is a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The talk by Parker requires advance ticket purchase. The fee is $30 for members, $40 for non-members. For more information, visit www.filoli.org.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
