Host families needed for Chinese students

Families are needed to host students from China going to De Anza College (by bus) for two weeks this summer. The host dates are July 18-30, and reimbursement is $600 for room and board.

Foothill commencement set for Friday

Foothill College has scheduled its 46th annual commencement ceremony 6 p.m. Friday in the Library Quad. Admission to the commencement ceremony is free and tickets are not required. Families and guests are invited to attend. Arrive early to locate parking and seating. Graduates, faculty and staff marching in the procession should meet for line-up instructions at 5:15 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre.

Foothill College is located at 12345 S. El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills.

Foothill College hosts writers conference

Authors of all ability levels can read, write and review poems, prose, fiction and nonfiction by registering for the 30th Annual Foothill College Writers Conference. The event is scheduled July 7-11 and features intensive daily workshops, lectures and seminars as well as instruction from guest authors and faculty from Foothill’s creative writing program.

Small-group interaction is emphasized in manuscript workshops and offers participants an opportunity to have their work critiqued by professional and amateur authors. In addition, prose and poetry readings are presented daily at noon and 7 p.m.

The conference is offered as a one-unit course. California residents pay $17 per unit plus applicable fees for Foothill courses.

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
