Loyola K-Kids help school hit by Katrina

The Loyola Elementary School K-Kids, a service club of second- through sixth-graders sponsored by the Los Altos Kiwanis Club, is scheduled to hold a root beer float sale June 9 after school.

Proceeds will be used for school supplies for the St. Martin North Elementary School in Biloxi, Miss., which was damaged by Hurricane Katrina and lost nearly one-third of its student body due to subsequent relocation.

Floats, $2, will be made with vanilla ice cream and a choice of root beer, orange soda, Coke or Sprite. Loyola School is located at 770 Berry Ave. in Los Altos.

Blach dedicates Arthur S. Harris Library and Media Center

Blach Intermediate School is renaming its library the Arthur S. Harris Library and Media Center in honor of recently deceased principal Art Harris. A dedication ceremony will take place Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the quad.

Blach is located at 1120 Covington Road in Los Altos.

MVLA throws Fischer retirement party

A party for retiring Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District Superintendent Rich Fischer is scheduled 4-7 p.m. June 7 at Cuesta Park in Mountain View. The event is open to the community and is sponsored by Armadillo Willy’s, the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce, the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Los Altos.

MVHS students win AVID awards

Three Mountain View High School students won awards at the AVID Region V Write Off Invitational Conference. Sonia Alarcon won best 11th-grade essay in Santa Clara County. Louis Smith won best 9th-grade essay in Region V (best of Santa Clara County, Santa Cruz County, Monterey County and San Benito County). Agnes Bautista won best 12th-grade essay in Region V. Other AVID student awards went to Tiffany White, who won the Regional Rotary Speech Contest and will now compete at the 3 Level N.S.C. County Regional Contest, and Brittani Conley, who placed second in the Regional Rotary Speech Contest.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
