Stefanick

The Los Altos/Mountain View Branch of the American Association of University Women is scheduled to present the 2006 Status of Women Award to Marcia Stefanick, Stanford professor of medicine (research) and chairwoman of the steering committee of the Women’s Health Initiative, noon May 20 at Don Giovanni restaurant, 235 Castro St., Mountain View.

Stefanick will discuss the Women’s Health Initiative’s latest findings - including nutritional studies and the current status of hormone replacement therapy - at the AAUW business meeting and luncheon.

Stefanick teaches at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, an interdisciplinary research program in the School of Medicine. The center conducts problem-focused research to test disease prevention and control programs, then shares its results with the larger population. She has worked extensively on women’s health topics, including research on memory, healthy eating, living well and cognitive aging.

Stefanick received her doctorate in physiology from Stanford in 1982 and completed a three-year fellowship at Stanford in cardiovascular disease prevention. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania.

AAUW has presented the award annually since 1975 to a woman in the community who has elevated the status of women. AAUW promotes education and equity for women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change.

The public is invited to attend the luncheon; tickets are $27.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
