In its return to action after nearly two weeks off due to rainouts and spring break, the Los Altos High baseball team showed few signs of rust.
The Eagles won both their games last week, improving to 10-5-2 overall.
Los Altos topped Saratoga 7-2 Thursday in league play and beat Willow Glen 6-4 Saturday in non-league action.
“I was a little worried about how we’d do after such a long layoff, but we made plays when we needed them and came together offensively and defensively,” Eagles head coach Sandy Wihtol said. “I think (the players) are feeling good.”
The layoff may have hurt the pitchers most, yet last week’s starters Isaac Wilhelm and Connor Smith did enough to keep their perfect league records intact.
“They both didn’t have their A games - they were a little rusty - but they got better as the games progressed,” Wihtol said.
Wilhelm pitched a complete game against Saratoga, improving to 4-0 in league. The junior allowed two earned runs and nine hits. Smith also boosted his record to 4-0, giving up two earned runs in six innings against Willow Glen.
Los Altos came from behind to beat visiting Willow Glen, which led 2-0 after two innings.
The Eagles scored one in the third, then exploded for five runs in the sixth to take the lead. Kellen McColl got Los Altos going in the sixth by belting a home run. The Eagles soon loaded the bases, and Danny Young - a recent call-up from the frosh-soph team - delivered a two-run single. Kurt Kaszubinski followed with another single, driving in two more runs.
Los Altos had a big sixth inning against Saratoga as well.
Leading 4-2, the Eagles scored three runs to essentially put the game away. McColl finished the day with three RBIs, while Jason Craine, Kyle Tachibana and Devin Matthews each had two hits.
The victory put Los Altos at 8-1 in the SCVAL El Camino Division, second only to Homestead (6-0).
Los Altos is scheduled to play host Santa Clara at 7 p.m. Thursday at Washington Park.
Spartans stumped
Two homers in the seventh weren’t quite enough for Mountain View Friday.
The Spartans fell 3-2 to visiting Los Gatos, sinking to 4-6 in the SCVAL De Anza Division.
Joe Hatasaki and Adam Lanthier homered for Mountain View. Hatasaki, the starting pitcher, took the loss and dropped to 2-3 for the season.
The Spartans (5-10 overall) are set to host Wilcox at 3:30 p.m. today.
