LAH group invites residents to redistricting forum
Los Altos Hills Citizens Against Redistricting has scheduled a public meeting 7-8:30 p.m. April 24 in the Bullis-Purissima Elementary School multipurpose room to address residents’ questions and concerns about the city council’s recent vote to redistrict Los Altos Hills into a separate school district.
Meeting topics include current plans for the Bullis-Purissima site, how redistricting would work and how citizens can fight to ensure that school choice is not taken away from Los Altos Hills’ families.
Los Altos Hills Citizens Against Redistricting is a group of residents who say they are frustrated with ongoing school politics, erroneous information and lack of access to neighboring school districts.
The group has invited representatives of the Los Altos, Mountain View and Palo Alto school districts and Los Altos School District board member Mark Goines to participate.
Bullis-Purissima Elementary School is located at 25890 Fremont Road, Los Altos Hills.
Learn how to build a model house
The Museum of American History in Palo Alto is offering students ages 10 and up the opportunity to learn basic drafting techniques. During the hands-on session students will build a pre-cut home of foam-core board and trim materials and mount it on a corrugated cardboard platform complete with grass, driveway and plants.
The lessons are scheduled 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday and April 22 at the Museum of American Heritage, 351 Homer Ave., Palo Alto. The cost is $35 for members, $50 for nonmembers.

AVID sponsors Fun and Wellness Day
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), a support program for students who are the first in their families to attend college, has scheduled a Fun and Wellness Day fund-raiser at Los Altos High School 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22. Proceeds from the event will help students pay for their college tuition and books.
The fund-raiser will include an all-ages walkathon, swimathon, 5-on-5 soccer tournament and tennis challenge. A community fair featuring local organizations will highlight health and nutrition, the theme of the day, with demonstrations and handouts.
The day will also include live entertainment, a variety of healthy foods and a raffle.

MVLA award-winning speech and debate team performs for public
Four students from the Mountain View-Los Altos Speech and Debate Team have advanced to the state and national championships. Members of the community are invited to hear the students in a showcase scheduled for 7-9 p.m. April 19 in the Mountain View High School theater.
The team’s top nationally ranked Lincoln-Douglas debaters, Prashant Rai and Stephen Hess, seniors at Mountain View High, are two of only three Lincoln-Douglas debaters from the area who qualified to compete in the National Forensic League Tournament. They also both qualified to compete again this year for the national title at the Tournament of Champions. Stephen additionally qualified to compete at the California State Speech Championship Tournament. At the Mountain View High showcase, they will debate the topic: The use of the state’s power of eminent domain to promote private enterprise is unjust.
Cyndhia Ramatchandirane, a junior from Los Altos High School, qualified to compete in both the California State Speech Championship Tournament and the National Forensic League Tournament. For the showcase she will perform her original oratory, “Small Is Big,” which focuses on the accumulated value of small contributions.
Margaret Lewis, a sophomore at Los Altos High, will compete in the State Speech Championship Tournament April 19. She will perform her original expository speech on the power of music. Margaret won first place at the state-qualifying tournament. She is in her first year of competition.
