Pinewood Singers, the high school choir of Pinewood School in Los Altos Hills, recently won a contest at KFOX radio station competing against 32 Santa Clara County schools.
The contest required the group to make a recording of one of their songs for KFOX to play on the radio. After the radio play, the public was asked to vote for the best performance.
On March 22 the choir was invited to the station to perform “Bohemian Rhapsody” on “The Greg Kihn Show,” during which they were presented with a gold record engraved with their school’s name and a check for $2,500.
Morgan Hill Independence Day Inc. donated $750 in prize money. Pinewood Singers director Kristina Overcashier said the other money was from an anonymous donor she thinks is from the Los Altos area.
“We are so lucky at Pinewood and in this area for all the support we receive,” she said.
Each year the Pinewood Singers travel to Southern California for the Heritage Festival to compete against other California schools. Last year the group was awarded the silver award.
The singers hope to use a portion of the money for trip expenses. The remainder will be used to purchase new choral risers, a new set of recording equipment or T-shirts for all the members.
Pinewood Singers is a four-part mixed choir that performs traditional Western music.
