Castro Mariano Elementary School in Mountain View is seeking volunteers for its Generation Connection projects, in which participants work with students in the classroom or the garden in an effort to boost their English skills.

In-class volunteers share stories from their childhoods and help students with their writing. Garden volunteers meet in the Mountain View Senior Garden to talk with students about nature. No prior experience is necessary; volunteers receive explicit instructions.

“For a small commitment, you can make a big impact on these children,” said Linda McCrary, project coordinator.

The classroom project meets 8:30-10:30 a.m. for seven Tuesdays. The garden project meets 12:30-2:30 p.m. for seven Tuesdays. The projects are sponsored by Mountain View-Los Altos Adult Education.

For more information, call McCrary at 940-6024 or visit www.mvlaae.net/volunteer.html.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
