The San Francisco Decorator Showcase is set April 29 through May 29 at a Presidio Heights mansion, 3701 Washington at Spruce. The renovation is a must-see for potential buyers and people interested in interior and exterior design.
The annual benefit for the financial aid program at San Francisco University High School will feature a self-guided audio tour.
The mansion was built in 1902 by architects Samuel and Sidney Newsom for the Nelly and John E. Mason family. It was sold in 1928 to George Wagner, whose construction firm built San Francisco City Hall. Wagner, with architects Bakewell and Weihe, converted it into a French Renaissance Revival style home.
The current owners bought the house in 2005 and updated it to meet the needs of a 21st century family. The four-level home sits on an 8,700-square-foot lot, surrounded by lush gardens leading to a carriage house guest quarters.
A dramatic spiral staircase was continued up to the third floor, where the former servants’ quarters were renovated into spacious rooms. The former dining room was made into a family room, and what was the library is the current dining room. A contemporary great room fills the upper level, with expansive views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The house in its former incarnation was used for a decorator showcase in 1988.
