Burns, Friedman in forum package

The Celebrity Forum Speaker Series is offering a special package for talks this month by documentary filmmaker Ken Burns and in May by New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. No individual tickets will be sold.

A $75 ticket reserves a seat at both lectures and gives a ticket holder a choice of three dates for each performance at the Flint Center for Performing Arts at De Anza College, 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd., in Cupertino.

Burns will lecture today, Thursday and Friday. Friedman is scheduled to speak May 17, 18 and 19. To order tickets, call 949-7625. Visa and MasterCard are accepted.

Founded in 1968 by Dick Henning, the Celebrity Forum series includes three separate speaker packages per season. For more information, visit www.celebrity

Viewpoints exhibit features Balliet

Viewpoints Gallery in Los Altos presents the floral watercolors of Lillian Balliet in April.

“Flowers are perfect for the medium of watercolor with their transparency and brilliant luminosity,” she said. “The color, shape and design of flowers are lyrical and fascinating for me and provide endless subject matter.”

Balliet, an avid gardener, has arranged flowers at Filoli mansion in Woodside for the past 24 years. The exhibit at Viewpoints Gallery, 315 State St., runs through April 28. For more information, visit www.viewpointsgallery.com or call 941-5789.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
