NANCY BURDICK MARSTON

8/10/1928 - 2/24/2006

Passed away on February 24, 2006 at the age of 77. Nancy is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Alan; their four children, Dick Marston, Beverly Marston, Brad Marston and Liz Meyer; two daughters-in-law, Linda Marston and Marcie Marston; two sons-in-law, Bill Runyon and Don Meyer; and seven grandchildren, Bryce and Brooke Marston, Tyler and Sarah Runyon, Zach and Zoe Meyer and Anna Marston.

Nancy was born in Washington D.C. She grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with four sisters and one brother. She graduated from Western Maryland, now McDaniel College, majoring in math, with a minor in art.

After college, Nancy worked for a short period of time at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics laboratory in Maryland.

Nancy married Alan Marston on June 10, 1951. They moved to Glendora, California in 1956 and to Los Altos in 1967, where they have resided since.

An avid supporter of the arts, Nancy was instrumental in starting the Los Altos Art Docents Program in 1970, which supplements the arts curriculum of local public schools. She served as the coordinator of the program for the next fourteen years. She was an accomplished artist herself, specializing in watercolors and she received regional recognition for her work. Her membership and work with the Los Altos Arts Committee helped bring several artistically significant sculptures to the community.

Nancy was active in the United Methodist Church, both in Glendora and Los Altos, where she was responsible for the Arts Alive program and the Replica of the Living Masters for many years.

Nancy dedicated her life to her passions: family, friends, art and travel…in particular to France. Above all, she was a passionate connoisseur of life itself.

Family and friends attended a service on Thursday March, 2 at Los Altos United Methodist Church.

In her memory, donations may be made to the Nancy Marston Fund (make checks out to the Los Altos Art Docents and sent to: Los Altos Art Docent Office, c/o Nan Bajka, 201 Covington Rd., Los Altos, CA 94022) or to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.

He was the last living member of his Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Oregon. His family and business career were in Los Altos. He was the oldest Los Altos Rotarian.

Gene is survived by two children, Kathy Burleson of Chandler, AZ and Ed Tarbell of Las Vegas. His grandchildren are Amy Perkins of Portland and Jeff Tarbell of Lake Oswego and six great grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Tom and sister Marguerite Mautz. In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
