Hersey

The California Charter Schools Conference named Wanny Hersey, superintendent and principal at Bullis Charter School, Educator of the Month for February.

The conference described Hersey as a dynamic leader responsible for mentoring teachers and establishing innovative programs for students. Under her leadership, Bullis scored 973 on its Academic Performance Index in 2005.

“We at Bullis Charter School are very proud of Wanny and the things she has accomplished for our school in such a very short amount of time,” Bullis parent Darin Conway said.

Hersey has been an educator for more than 20 years. Starting as a classroom teacher in Vancouver, Canada, her career in education includes teaching and administrative experience spanning elementary, middle and high school levels, including being a Toronto Conservatory of Music certified piano and music theory teacher.

Compared to most schools, Bullis schoolwork includes more writing and project-based assignments, and fewer fill-in-the-blank worksheets.

Students are required to participate in drama, dance, vocal and instrumental music, art and PE. In addition, every student (K-6) participates in a variety of elective topics with a focus on educating the whole child.

Bullis Charter School is a small, public school that emphasizes individualized learning plans, national best practices for academic excellence, hands-on projects and an enriched curriculum during school and in optional after-school activities.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
