AAUW schedules spring social
The American Association of University Women, Los Altos-Mountain View branch, invites prospective and new members to a spring social and information meeting 7 p.m. March 21.
Attendees will learn about AAUW national and state programs and a wide range of local activities. Membership is open to anyone with a two-year or four-year degree from an accredited college or university, nurse training or a degree from a business college.
AAUW promotes equity for women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change. Locally, AAUW selects and sponsors seventh-grade girls to attend Tech Trek summer science camp at Stanford University. It also coordinates Tech Time Science Club for Girls, a hands-on science enrichment program for girls in grades 4 through 6.

Great Decisions talk focuses on pandemics
Microbiologist Dr. Kristien Mortelmans, director of the microbiology program at Menlo Park-based SRI International, will facilitate a community discussion on how pandemics impact national security 2-4 p.m. Thursday in the meeting room of the Los Altos main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.
Mortelmans, an expert in microbial mutagenesis, has been the project leader or principal investigator on many projects involving medical, industrial and environmental microbiology. She works closely with the staff of SRI’s newly established Center of Excellence in Infectious Diseases and Biodefense.
The discussion is part of the weekly Great Decisions series, a program coordinated by the Foreign Policy Association that runs through March 23. Future topics include Turkey’s role in Europe and human rights.
Great Decisions is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Los Altos-Mountain View, the Los Altos library, and the American Association of University Women.

Check out library’s newest program
The Los Altos library, the American Library Association and Woman’s Day magazine want to know how the library has changed people’s lives. Residents who have stories to tell can e-mail them to womansday@ala.org by May 10.
Four of the stories will be published in an upcoming issue of Woman’s Day. The story must be 700 words or less.
The initiative is part of the “Put It in Writing @ Your Library” program, which is sponsored by the American Library Association and Woman’s Day as part of The Campaign for America’s Libraries, a public awareness and advocacy campaign designed to promote the value of public, school, academic and special libraries and librarians in the 21st century.

Peace vigil at Los Altos plaza
Los Altos area residents Larissa Keet and Jill Jenson are organizing a peace vigil in recognition of International Women’s Day, 7-8 p.m. tonight at the Los Altos Community Plaza, located at Main and State streets. Residents are welcome to attend.
