Run, walk and roll into the new year
The Los Altos Recreation Department invites families, friends and neighbors to participate in the 2006 New Year’s Day 5K Fun Run, Walk and Roll.
The noncompetitive race begins at 9 a.m. New Year’s Day at the Community Plaza, corner of State and Main streets in downtown Los Altos.
All ages and ability levels are encouraged to run, walk, inline skate, scooter, skateboard or push a stroller 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) through the historic business district of Los Altos. State, Whitney and Main streets will be closed to vehicle traffic, as well as portions of First, Second, Third and Fourth streets. Bicycles will not be permitted on the course.
The event is free, and pre-registration is not required. Light refreshments will be served. Souvenir T-shirts designed by a local student artist will be available for purchase by Los Altos Sister Cities.
To volunteer or for more information, call Jennifer Weiss at 947-2890.
Young weightlifters to vie in exhibition
FIT trainers in Los Altos will host an exhibition of Olympic-style weightlifting by young athletes at 11 a.m. Jan. 8 at the gym in Rancho Shopping Center, Foothill Expressway and Magdalena Avenue.
The program is for students 8 to 13 wanting to get fit or become more competitive in school sports. The training works on a variety of physical skills using conditioning models from high school and college.
Younger age groups will begin at 11 a.m., including Nina Aronson, a 13-year-old from Blach Intermediate School. Nina has lost nearly 30 pounds and dropped her body fat percentage dramatically since she began at the camp.
Later in the day, older students such as David Garcia and Brian Hurwick, two high school juniors from San Francisco and Mountain View, respectively, will show off their skills.
