Main Street art collection on display

The “Main Street Holiday Collection” is currently on display at Main Street Cafe & Books in downtown Los Altos.

Jim Smyth is among the group of prominent artist/teachers whose works are showcased. Smyth, known for his life drawings and paintings, as well as colorful still lifes, is an instructor at the California Academy of Painters in the Palo Alto Art Center. His work can be seen at the Parkside Gallery at Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Smyth began his training after his discharge from the U.S. Air Force in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Academy of Fine Art, Florence, Italy, in 1965. He studied in Switzerland and in Paris, where he drew from the figure at several studios, including La Grande Chaumière.

George Rivera, executive director of the Triton Museum, Brigitte Curt of the California Academy of Painters and Lynne Urband, past president of the Los Altos Art Club, will exhibit their works along with other local artists with strong regional and national reputations. Many are instructors at local schools.

Main Street Cafe & Books is located at 134 Main St., Los Altos, and is open daily.

Museum participates in Gulf relief effort

The Los Altos History Museum announced its participation in “Museums Helping Museums: A National Relief Effort for the Gulf Region.”

The Los Altos History Museum joined with others in the museum community to support restoration of damaged collections and bolster the educational, cultural and economic roles of museums.

Make checks payable to the Los Altos History Museum and send to LAHM, c/o Allyn Feldman, 51 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos 94022.

All funds collected will go to an assistance fund established by SEMC. Money will be used for direct assistance to museums and museum professionals in the affected regions. In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
