Docents from the Los Altos-based Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District have scheduled a number of free activities, all taking place in the district’s open space preserves during December.

• Dec. 21, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Explorer Hike: A moderately paced excursion of 3-5 miles with a variety of elevation gains at Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. The route will be determined by trail and weather conditions.

• Dec. 21, 3-5:30 p.m. Sundown Shadows at Philosophers’ Rock: This moderate 7-mile bike ride will explore the Long Ridge and Peters Creek area.

The objective is to meet at Philosopher’s Rock at sundown to observe where the shadow of the legendary rock falls to predict the arrival of spring. Meet at Hickory Oaks Trailhead at Long Ridge Open Space Preserve.

The trailhead pullout is 5.1 miles south of Page Mill Road or 1.3 miles north of Highway 9 on the west side of Skyline Boulevard. Reservations are required and can be made on the district’s Web site.

• Dec. 26, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Grand Loop of Four Preserves: This hike offers the opportunity to hike off some of those holiday calories. This 14th annual tour visits four preserves near Skyline Boulevard and Page Mill Road.

The 7-mile hike will contain some strenuous to moderately paced sections and will gain 1,400 feet in elevation. Meet at Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve. Lug-soled boots are recommended.

• Dec. 31, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Search for the Everlasting: This leisurely paced 4-mile hike will go from Stevens Creek to a mint-covered hillside with spectacular views.

Expect 200-foot climbs. Meet at Picchetti Ranch. Wine tasting on your own may be available after the hike.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
