A Saturday night football game turned violent at Foothill College Dec. 3 when spectators brawled after a championship match between Half Moon Bay and Seaside high schools.

Campus security estimated 50-100 spectators broke into fistfights before the stadium was cleared. No arrests were made. One man refused treatment for light injuries, said Foothill-De Anza District Police Sgt. Al Asuncion.

The fights started after Half Moon Bay’s capture of the division title. In the final minutes of the game, a referee’s disputed call ended Seaside’s last play - and the game.

“These incidents happen very, very rarely. There are controversial calls at many games - I can’t see why there was a fight,” Asuncion said.

Half Moon Bay Coach Matt Ballard said he wasn’t even sure that the brawl pitted school against school. “We’ve never played each other before. Usually people fight outside of a game because they were drunk,” he said.
