Saira Diaz Flores, a resident of Mountain View and a senior at Los Altos High School, has won a $1,000 college scholarship from Standard Pacific Homes as part of the company’s “StanPac” Scholarship Program.
Saira earned a 3.9 grade-point average while serving as president of the Arts in Action and Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) clubs. She is a member of the California Scholastic Federation and volunteers as an art aide at the Community School of Music and Art.
Matthew Robert Levy and Emma Tholander Powell, both of Los Altos, are degree candidates for the end of the fall term at the University of Oregon. Levy is scheduled to receive a bachelor’s degree in sociology, and Powell a bachelor’s degree in English.
Cyrus Ghajar of Los Altos has been named a 2005-2006 Scholar by the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation, a national organization that provides scholarships to academically outstanding U.S. citizens studying to complete their degrees in science, medicine and engineering. Ghajar is a doctoral candidate in biomedical engineering at UC Irvine’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering.
Saxophonist Andy Perlitch of Homestead High School and trumpeter Akhil Gopal of Mountain View High School have been named members of the San Jose Jazz Society Youth Orchestra, an ensemble of 19 Bay Area ninth- through 12th-grade students. The orchestra will perform at the Jazz Society’s 2006 Sunday Series and the 17th Annual Comcast San Jose Jazz Festival next August.
