Health career training, tutorial services, technical support internships and musical theater are among the 12 Foothill College programs and student services awarded more than $108,000 by the Foothill Commission at its Nov. 17 allocation ceremony.

“Each year, there are fewer public dollars to support our community colleges, which are an extraordinary public resource. That’s why the Foothill Commission has made it their priority to ensure the success of Foothill College, and we applaud their visionary efforts that provide opportunities for our students to achieve and succeed,” said Marie Fox Ellison, executive director of the Foothill-De Anza Foundation.

Allocations are as follows:

• Foothill Allied Health Programs receive $6,000 to provide tutoring and support for students who are pursuing a career in one of Foothill’s many allied health careers.

• Campus Heritage Rooms receive $25,000 to represent the cultural heritage of Foothill students.

• Campus Tutorial Center receives $10,000 to pay the student tutors and to offer more services to needy students.

• CompTechS receives $5,000 for technical support internships for Foothill and De Anza students seeking careers in information technology - careers that cannot be performed offshore.

• Dallas Black Dance Foothill Outreach receives $2,500 to present a live cultural performance to 2,000 middle school students and inform them that an education at Foothill is affordable.

• Foothill Intercollegiate Speech & Debate Team receives $1,500 to pay the expenses of competition in the Bay Area and beyond.

• Foothill Music Theatre receives $25,000 for costumes, salaries for support staff, band, materials and scholarships for needy students participating in music theater productions.

• Graphic Design receives $1,500 to help launch the new Foothill Graphics and Interactive Design Program, which offers training for careers in graphic design, design for the World Wide Web, multimedia, illustration and digital publishing.

• Honors Program receives $3,800 to award scholarships to 38 students who complete six designated honors courses.

• Krause Center for Innovation receives $6,500 to help K-12 teachers maximize their use of technology in the classroom.

• Lohman Theater receives $10,000 for the focus of the largest single Measure E construction project, the lower campus complex.

• Pass the Torch receives $12,000 to help at-risk students advance to the next level of instruction in their coursework.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
