Federated Woman’s Club meets

The Federated Woman’s Club of Los Altos will hold its monthly meeting 11 a.m. Dec. 7 at Michaels at Shoreline Restaurant, Shoreline Park, Mountain View.

Lunch is at noon. The Los Altos-Mountain View High School Choir will perform a selection of Christmas carols at 1 p.m.

Holiday collection on display

A new art exhibit, the “Main Street Holiday Collection,” is currently on display at Main Street Cafe & Books in downtown Los Altos.

Jim Smyth is among the group of prominent artist/teachers whose works are showcased in the collection. Smyth, known for his life drawings and paintings, as well as colorful still lifes, is currently an instructor at the California Academy of Painters in the Palo Alto Art Center. His work can be seen at the Parkside Gallery at Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Smyth began his training, after his discharge from the U.S. Air Force in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Academy of Fine Art, Florence, Italy, in 1965. He studied in Switzerland and in Paris, where he drew from the figure at several studios, including La Grande Chaumière.

George Rivera, executive director of the Triton Museum, Brigitte Curt of the California Academy of Painters and Lynne Urband, past president of the Los Altos Art Club, will exhibit their works along with other local artists with strong regional and national reputations. Many are instructors at local schools.

Main Street Cafe & Books is located at 134 Main St., Los Altos, and is open daily.

Brain cancer institute hosts fund-raiser

The Future Brain Cancer Institute has scheduled its annual holiday fund-raising reception 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Borel Private Bank and Trust Company, 245 Lytton Ave., Palo Alto.

The institute is a partner of the UCSF Medical Center and hopes to raise $2 million for brain cancer research.

The public is invited. RSVP by calling 949-4201. There is a suggested minimum donation of $25 per guest; donations may be made online through Paypal (www.saveyourbrain.org/donate), by mail (Future Brain Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 1039, Palo Alto 94302) or on the night of the event.

Lecture highlights de Young exhibit

de Young Museum docent Sharon Walton is scheduled to speak at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Los Altos library program room on “Hatshepsut: From Queen to Pharaoh,” the inaugural exhibit at the newly reopened museum.

Walton’s illustrated lecture will tell the story of Hatshepsut’s reign, a period of great artistic creativity.

It will highlight the vast treasure of royal statuary and relief, monumental sculpture representing the royal court and a wide variety of ceremonial objects, finely crafted furniture, jewelry and other personal items.

Restaurant continues to support Red Cross

Armadillo Willy’s nine Bay Area locations have designated Dec. 13 to donate 100 percent of their profits and all proceeds of specially marked bottles of Armadillo Willy’s BBQ sauce to the American Red Cross local chapters and hurricane relief funds.

El Camino auxiliary offers scholarships

El Camino Hospital Auxiliary and Foundation is offering scholarships to students pursuing careers in professional health fields.

Graduating high school seniors and full-time college students enrolled in an accredited California college or university may apply.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and permanent residents in the El Camino Hospital District, which includes the cities of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Cupertino.

Awards are granted on the basis of financial need, scholastic achievement, goals and character.

The Scholarship Committee evaluates, interviews and selects recipients, and determines the amount of each award.

Completed applications must be received in the Auxiliary office no later than Jan. 27.

Applications are available at local high school career centers; local college financial aid offices; the main libraries in Los Altos, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Cupertino; and the El Camino Hospital Auxiliary Office. Local agency collects Toys for Tots

All Horizons Travel in downtown Los Altos is serving as local collection headquarters for Toys for Tots, a national toy-collecting drive for the underprivileged spearheaded by the U.S. Marine Corps, according to Col. Roy Jones of All Horizons Travel.

All Horizons Travel is located at 160 Main St., and you can drop off unwrapped toys through Dec. 19.

Volunteers needed at history museum

The Los Altos History Museum needs volunteers to help as docents, work in the museum store and support public education and educational programs.

The annual Los Altos-Los Altos Hills Volunteer Award Luncheon honoring unsung volunteers is scheduled for Friday at the Los Altos Youth Center.

Homebound seniors need volunteer drivers

Community Services Agency aims to help homebound seniors live healthy and independent lives and to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. The agency is seeking volunteers who can drive seniors to and from medical appointments. To volunteer, call 964-4630.

Riding class seeks help for handicapped

The Westwind Riding Institute, located at Westwind Barn, Los Altos Hills, is looking for volunteers to aid in a program that helps disabled youth.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
