Forensics team wins individual sweepstakes
Foothill College’s award-winning Speech and Debate Team continued its success at two recent tournaments: Delta College’s Mustang Invitational Nov. 11 and University of the Pacific’s Tiger Invitational Nov. 12 and 13.
Foothill won first place in the small school individual events sweepstakes, which included 64 two- and four-year schools from across the nation. Speech communications instructor Lauren Popell Velasco coaches the team.
Fall seminars on financial aid
The Foothill College Financial Aid Office teams up with several lending institutions to present the weekly Financial Aid Fall Seminar Series through Dec. 15 from noon to 1 p.m. in Appreciation Hall (Room 1501). Admission is free and the public is invited. Each seminar will last approximately one hour, and financial aid counselors will be available after the presentation for
questions.

The seminars are as follows:
• Thursday, “Loan Consolidation”: Cheryl Barnes of CitiBank will discuss how loan consolidation allows students to refinance any or all eligible outstanding federal student loans and create a single new loan with one monthly payment.
• Dec. 8, “Sub vs. Unsub”: John Vacanti of Bank of America clears up the mystery between the two types of Stafford student loans and explains how a school determines loan eligibility.
• Dec. 15, “Identity Theft & Debt Management”: Michael Benson of Wells Fargo discloses how to avoid this growing problem and the measures available if you suspect your identity has been stolen. He will also discuss how students can finish college, pay for student loans and take charge of their financial future.
Foothill premieres instructor’s composition
The California Youth Symphony and London-based pianist Kate Ryder will premiere “Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra,” an original composition by Foothill music instructor Paul Davies, 2:30 p.m. Dec. 11 in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College.
Romantic and sprinkled with jazz rhythms, the piece is accessible to lovers of all musical genres. The program includes a selection of traditional holiday favorites.
Tickets, sold at the door: $12 for the general public, $6 for students and seniors.
