Marlene Cowan, Lee Lynch, Dick Hasenpflug, Jean Newton, Mary Prochnow, and Barbara and Dude Angius lead Rotary AIDS Project efforts.

In recognition of World AIDS Day tomorrow, “The Los Altos Story,” a 30-minute film about the effect of AIDS, will air on cable TV stations throughout the Bay Area.

“The Los Altos Story” documents how AIDS changed the lives of three local Rotary Club members, their friends, their family and the entire community.

Designed to alert and educate Rotarians and others worldwide about the AIDS pandemic, the film has now been seen by millions of people.

As a result, the film has spawned international AIDS projects and programs to help change attitudes and behaviors and to educate others about the effects of the disease.

The film, produced in 1989 by the Rotary Club of Los Altos, received national media attention and won several awards when it was originally shown, including the George F. Peabody Award for broadcast excellence and cable TV’s Ace award for best public affairs special.

Broadcast schedule for “The Los Altos Story”: today, 7 p.m., San Francisco, Ch. 23; Thursdays throughout December at 4 p.m., Mountain View-Los Altos, KMVT; Thursday, 5:30 p.m., San Jose-Campbell, Ch. 15; Thursday, 10 p.m., Saratoga, KSAR, Ch. 15; Thursday, 5:30 p.m., Cupertino, Ch. 26; Jan. 1, 6:30 a.m., San Jose, KTEH, Ch. 54.

As part of its AIDS project, the local club operates Project Match, which links non-profit organizations that want help with their HIV/AIDS-related projects with Rotary Clubs that can provide that support.

In addition, the club maintains a list of projects for which it welcomes the help of other organizations.

Groups that already have an HIV/AIDS-related project and want support from a Rotary Club can fill out a project listing form or check the list of Partner Clubs to see which clubs are interested in helping.
